Introduction

CharterQuest has built a proud legacy of producing ACCA Top Achievers, students recognised by ACCA itself for earning the highest marks in their exam papers at national level. In the June 2025 sitting, two CQ students, Nicole Naidoo (Audit & Assurance) and Thabani Chinamona (Taxation SA Variant), earned this prestigious honour.

Behind their success is Mandlenkosi (“Mandla”) Ncube, a qualified accountant, registered tax practitioner, and one of CQ’s most dedicated lecturers. His teaching philosophy, rooted in passion and preparation, played a pivotal role in guiding Nicole and Thabani to official ACCA Top Achiever Awards.-

Early Academic Excellence

Mandla’s academic journey began in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where he consistently earned awards for academic excellence during his primary and secondary school years. He completed his O-Levels at Milton High School and later earned a certificate in Auditing from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

His passion for deep thinking and structured analysis led him to pursue a BA in Philosophy (cum laude) at St Joseph’s Theological Institute in Pietermaritzburg. In 2011, driven by a commitment to finance, audit, and governance, he enrolled with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He completed his BSc Applied Accounting at Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Professional Career

Mandla has built an impressive career across auditing, accounting, and strategy:

  • Internal Audit Supervisor at Ukukhanya Advisory Services, specialising in internal control reviews, risk-based auditing, and forensic audit.

  • Senior Accountant at Frontline Business Solutions, where he managed financial reporting, tax consulting, and advisory for clients, including medical professionals.

  • Executive Director at Ncube Investment Holdings, focusing on entrepreneurship, business strategy, and advisory services.

  • Lecturer at CharterQuest since 2023, teaching Audit & Assurance (AA), Taxation (TX), and Strategic Business Leadership (SBL).

He is also an active member of ACCA, the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa, and SAIBA (Business Accountant SA).

Beyond his professional work, Mandla has served as Provincial Chairperson of the Black Management Forum Young Professionals in KZN and later as BMF YP National Chairman, reflecting his commitment to leadership and transformation. He also dedicates time to volunteer work, sourcing funding for orphans and vulnerable children through the Missionaries of Mariannhill.

Teaching Philosophy,

For Mandla, teaching is not just a career — it’s a calling.

“This is not a job, it’s a calling. A calling to produce the next generation of professional accountants.”

His approach rests on three pillars:

  1. Understanding students individually — learning their backgrounds and tailoring teaching to meet them where they are.

  2. Preparation with purpose — treating each class as a serious opportunity to build mastery.

  3. Passion and participation — ensuring classes are interactive, with students encouraged to discuss and engage.

When teaching Taxation (TX), he focuses on understanding principles before diving into calculations, ensuring students can apply knowledge under pressure. In Audit & Assurance (AA), he works to demystify the subject by showing that “auditing is a part of everyday life,” enabling students to think like auditors instead of memorising notes.

HE often says, “Regurgitating procedures is not beneficial — teaching the reason behind them helps students draft their own and use audit language properly.”

Impact on Students

Mandla’s teaching philosophy bore fruit in June 2025, when two of his students earned ACCA Top Achiever Awards — recognition directly from ACCA, not CQ, given only to the highest scorer in each paper in the country.

  • Nicole Naidoo achieved South Africa’s highest mark in Audit & Assurance (AA).

  • Thabani Chinamona achieved the top score in Taxation (TX).

Their success continues CQ’s tradition of producing award-winning students year after year — a tradition powered by dedicated lecturers like Mandla.

Personal Reflection

Mandla believes his role is to inspire and prepare future leaders in finance, governance, and strategic advisory:

“Regurgitating procedures is not beneficial — teaching the reason behind them helps students draft their own, use the right language, and develop as professionals.”

His passion for blending theory with practice ensures CQ students are not only exam-ready but also career-ready.
